Born & raised in Indianapolis Indiana on Jan 22, 1976, Judo black belt and BJJ 2nd Degree Black Belt, Travis Haynes began training Martial Arts as a young boy in Judo and karate, around 1988 before stopping due to a serious injury. It wouldn't be until the age of 16 that he would find himself back on the mats training in a traditional form of Japanese Jiu Jitsu as well as Judo. This was before the very first UFC, when most of the world was still believing that high flying kicks & punches were the way to go.
Once the UFC occurred, and everyone, including Travis became aware of the Brazilian style of Jiu Jitsu, many people flocked to any school offering legitimate instruction. At the time there was only 1 person teaching BJJ within 100 miles of Travis. So he sought him out. Being obsessed with more knowledge, a trait that would later earn him the nickname "BJJ Encyclopedia" from other black belts, Travis began roadtrips all over to anywhere he could find black belt instruction, driving as far as St Louis Missouri, from Indianapolis just to take a private lesson and a group class with a black belt!
He began making regular trips to Rio De Janeiro Brazil to learn directly from the Masters. It would be here that he would make a fateful friendship in his mentor, Marcello C Monteiro, at the time a young, but gifted teacher & black belt from the wizard of the guard game, Ricardo De La Riva, himself a disciple of the Grandmaster, Carlson Gracie Sr. Travis would be instrumental to getting people interested in Marcello back in the states since he was at this time, an incredibly technical but unknown instructor who spoke nearly no English. It was on Travis' word alone that Marcello was on a level of technique that these school owners had never experienced, that he negotiated on his behalf as his representative to get him his first school, moving him to the USA, & making the 1st logo used by BJJ COACH Association in the US.
Falling on hard times himself after, he would eventually spend time sleeping on the floor of that very gym, rebuilding his own life while training under Marcello, eventually moving away to Ohio for years to go to school, becoming a Nurse and training at various schools in Ohio, though never forgetting his past lessons with his mentor, Marcello. The academies in Ohio noted the smooth style that he brought that had a decidedly different feel than what was being practiced here, which tended to be influenced by American wrestlers and football players who picked up the art and utilized more strength and less open guard. He would also fill the thirst of more knowledge seeking out the instruction of Sambo instructors anywhere he could find them.( Sambo is a Russian grappling system that specializes on dynamic throws and leg locks.)
Fast forward to the present day, and Travis and Marcello have once again united as Travis is now 100% a representative of BJJ COACH ASSOCIATION. The team he helped Marcello create in the mountains of Nova Friburgo, Brazil. It is in Ohio where this chapter of the story begins and where a whole new generation of champions are being created, where YOU are invited to become part of our team and write YOUR history with us!!!
